Air raid sirens went off at a Russian airbase in Engels last night as Moscow was on alert after Ukraine invaded hundreds of kilometers of Russian airspace by attacking two bases.

Russian state news agency TASS reported Yevgeny Shpolsky, a top official in the Engels district, as saying that a military unit had sounded a siren in the area and that there was “no threat to civilian infrastructure”.

A third Russian airbase was attacked and set on fire by drone strikes on Tuesday. Ukraine did not claim responsibility but widely celebrated the attack, which appeared to expose the vulnerability of Russia’s air defenses.

On the battlefield, Volodymyr Zelensky yesterday visited troops on the toughest frontline of the war in eastern Ukraine and thanked them for their efforts in resisting Vladimir Putin’s offensive.

Zelensky, dressed in his signature khaki green, said he spent the day with troops in Donbas and Kharkiv — both witnessing the full scale of Russia’s military offensive.

Russian forces continued shelling towns and villages in the region, Ukraine’s military said late Tuesday, killing six people in Donetsk.

US Tweaks Missiles Given to Ukraine to Prevent Attacks Inside Russia

The United States has secretly modified a powerful rocket-launcher system that it used to prevent Ukraine’s military from firing missiles at Russia and escalate the nearly year-long conflict.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, the United States modified HIMAR so that it would not be able to launch long-range missiles at Russia, hoping to create a wider conflict or the perception that the United States is an active combatant.

The tweaks mean the truck launchers cannot fire long-range US Army ATACM missiles and foreclose the use of other long-range weapons systems that Ukraine may acquire from other countries or companies.

This is likely a move by Washington to avoid a direct confrontation with Moscow. Russia has warned the Kremlin would consider providing Ukraine with long-range missiles a deliberate provocation.
