The Duke and Duchess of Sussex said a “wave of hope can become a wave of change” after being honored for their activism work in New York.

Harry and Meghan received the Ripple of Hope Award at a ceremony at the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights (RFKHR) organization on Tuesday night.

The accolade honors exemplary leaders across government, business, advocacy and entertainment, and the duo is recognized for their racial justice and mental health work.

During the ceremony the couple announced a new collaboration between their foundation The Archwell Foundation and RFKHR – Archwell Foundation Prize for Gender Equity in Student Film.

“Our hope with this award is to inspire a new generation of leadership in the arts, where diverse and up-and-coming talent have a platform to make their voices heard and tell their stories,” the couple said in a statement.

“The values of the RFK Foundation and the Archwell Foundation align with our shared beliefs of courage over fear and love over hate.

“Together we know that a wave of hope can become a wave of change.”

It comes just hours before the start of the couple’s tell-all Netflix show, which is set to begin streaming on Thursday.

The royal family is bracing itself for the bombshell reveal, with Harry talking about “hierarchy in the family”, a “dirty game” and warning “we know the whole truth” in the show’s trailer.

Elsewhere on the night, the Duke joked that he thought he was taking his wife on a “date night”.

Speaking on stage with RFKHR president Kerry Kennedy, Harry said: “I’ll be honest with you Kerry I just thought we were just going to have a date night so I found it quite strange that we were sharing a room with 1500 people.

“We don’t get out much these days because our kids are so young and small so it’s totally unexpected.”

To laughter from the audience she added: “But it’s nice to share date night with you all, so thanks for coming.”

Meghan added: “Thank you for bringing me on this special date night.”

“You’re welcome,” Harry said.

The pair were recognized along with other dignitaries, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to the RFKHR, the honorees are those who have “demonstrated an unwavering commitment to social change and work to protect and advance justice, equity and human rights”.

Mrs Kennedy, who is the daughter of Robert F Kennedy, said the Sussexes were “incredibly brave” in tackling issues of racial justice and mental illness.

“They stood up, they spoke out about racial justice and they spoke out about mental illness in a way that was incredibly brave,” she told US outlet Extra on the event’s blue carpet.

“There has been a huge spike in this world in the wake of Covid… people around the world have said they have anxiety and massive depression.

“For Megan to appear on national television and normalize the discussion of mental health, at this point, is incredibly important and very brave.”

Members of the public gathered in the rain and took photos and videos of the couple as they arrived at the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel on Tuesday.

Meghan wore a white, long-sleeved Louis Vuitton gown with a front slit and off-the-shoulder neckline, and the couple smiled at the crowd before posing on the event’s blue carpet.

The 2022 Ripple of Hope event was hosted by Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin.

In addition to Harry and Meghan, people recognized at the RFKHR event included Frank Baker, Siris co-founder and managing partner, Brian Moynihan, chair of the board and CEO of Bank of America, and founder and CEO Michael Polsky. Invenergy

The ceremony recognized NBA legend and civil rights icon Bill Russell with a posthumous award.
